Fluid Glances (2009)
Instrumentation: flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano Length: 3:00 Premiere: April 30, 2009 Embryonic Noise Concert Series Temple Ohabei Shalom, Brookline, MA Laura Heinrichs, flute; Nicolas del Grazia, clarinet; Ermir Abeshi, violin; Rachel Arnold, cello; Elaine Rombola, piano; Dan VanHassel, conductor Program Note: I don’t generally like to write pieces in multiple movements. The breaks between movements in classical pieces have always felt awkward to me, a product of a different musical era. I’ve since realized that there are certain advantages to using separate movements that are difficult to ignore, however I still instinctively felt that it was wrong to break up the music in that way. I decided then, that in an experiment, I would take as my model not classical form, but the album format in which, at its best, you can have much the same thing; several short pieces that are complete in and of themselves yet could also work together to form a larger musical arc. I had already written two pieces for the Pierrot instrumentation (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano) and realized that if I wrote a contrasting middle piece I could have a sort of three movement form if they were all played together, yet each could still stand alone as its own piece. Fluid Glances is that middle "movement." The piece used for the opening is Frivolous Incinerate and Agitate Ecstatic is the closer. |
