Program Note: All of the electronic sounds in this piece are creating using piano samples, most of which are recorded live during the performance. These piano samples are used in a variety of ways, ranging from simple to more complex. Examples include simple delays, in which the pianist plays in rhythm with himself creating a dynamic, polyrhythmic texture. In other places, very short snippets recorded from the piano are placed into rhythmic sequences, which build up into dense polyphonic textures influenced by the production techniques of electronica and pop music. In general the electronics are used as a means to extend and augment the piano’s expressive capabilities. Although the electronics create a new sonic landscape, in the end they are secondary to the piano which remains the driving expressive force in the piece.
