Program Note: Manipulated Inferno was written in 2003 while I was an undergrad at Carnegie Mellon University. In this piece I attempted to find common ground between the riff-based language of rock and funk music and the developmental procedures commonly found in classical music. The riffs used in this piece are meant to evoke the repetitive ostinatos of rock music, yet they continuously evolve as the piece progresses. The large scale form of the piece roughly mirrors that of my favorite Beatles song, "A Day in the Life," i.e. two large contrasting sections each culminating in a chaotic climax, to which I add a melodic coda.
