Nostalgia Fractures (2008) Instrumentation: fixed-media electronics Length: 6:30 Premiere:      February 28, 2008      11th Biennial Symposium on Arts and Technology      Connecticut College, New London, CT Audio: Nostalgia Fractures (excerpt) Program Note: Nostalgia Fractures is closely related to another piece, for flute, viola, harp and electronics, that I was working on at the same time. As a way to produce materials for that piece I took a lot of samples from various rock and jazz songs and combined them into a noisy collage. I really liked the way this noisy collage sounded and decided to expand it into a piece of its own. I had also previously been working on a more subdued piece made up of samples primarily from classical music sources. The combination of these two ideas resulted in Nostalgia Fractures. All of the sounds in this piece are created from samples appropriated from other recordings. Some of them are heavily processed beyond recognition, others less so.
